The new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, which will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, will hit the market later this year and will target the Nissan Qashqai, standing within the Japanese brand’s line between ASX and Outlander.
With all-wheel-drive, coupe styling and a name that was famous on the Mitsubishi line for having named a sports coupe, Eclipse Cross takes inspiration from the XR-PHEV prototype revealed in 2015. The style features angled lines and a wedge shape.
This model is essential for Mitsubishi – now part of the Renault Nissan Alliance – because despite the success of the Outlander PHEV (one of the best hybrid systems on the market) the Japanese brand has backed in a segment that sells the most and profits, Nissan Qashqai.
This model is not yet the result of the new management of Carlos Ghosn, who after leaving the presidency of Nissan, embraces the challenge of making Mitsubishi a profitable brand and protagonist in the East and the West. However, this is the first in a series of new models that Ghosn will impose to diversify the brand and its offer.
Eclipse Cross will immediately benefit from new sales and marketing practices imposed by Ghosn, which is expected to boost Mitsubishi’s sales, before programs for the next few years are unveiled.
The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will feature two engines, the 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline with a new CVT transmission that should feature a manual and eight-speed mode, plus the 2.2-liter turbodiesel, redesigned specifically for the European market and coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission speeds.
Inside, Eclipse displays a central screen in the form of a tablet for the infotainment system with the latest technologies like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The most equipped models have the ‘head up display’. In terms of versatility, the rear seat rebounds at 60/40.
